If I am at all convincing, you may be ready to run out that door and lay hands on the first Tarot deck you can find. I'd like to give you a little more information that may save you money and possibly eliminate some frustration.
A Tarot deck is a very personal thing. As you know, everyone is different, and not everyone's right-brain clicks to the same illustration style. One man's candy is another man's poison, and one man's Tarot deck is another man's nightmare. You should know that the images shown in a Tarot deck are based on symbolism that has been common to the human for thousands of years. It's powerful stuff. If you get a deck that doesn't jibe with your vibes, you won't get wisdom - you might just get a headache.
So when you go to pick one out, look at it. If it is sealed in cellophane, see if you can browse through a demo deck or catalogue somewhere. See that it feels good in your hands as you hold it. It may be larger than you are used to, and that is okay. As you look at the pictures, you shouldn't feel nervous or uptight. If you find yourself looking away or thinking of unpleasant things, then that deck is not for you. The right deck will be quite attractive to you, the pictures will seem pleasantly colorful and friendly (most of the cards, anyway. The sickness and sadness cards hardly ever look "friendly"). The right deck may bring images of happy times, or a smile to your face. It won't make you tense or unsure.
The Rider-Waite deck is a very neutral deck and is compatable with almost everyone. That means that it will probably look nice to you, but it may not be wonderfully attractive. It is fine for beginning and for study, however, and you can lay a good foundation with it.
It took me two years and over ten decks to find the one that really grabs me. If you are a person of gentleness (non-violence) and high intellect with strong female (yin) energy, you may find the Morgan-Greer deck to your liking. My favorite deck is the Mary Hanson-Roberts deck. It is truely a beautiful and loving deck.
Choose your deck with care. It is okay to have several decks. Most students have two decks of their favorite: one for spreads and one for day to day study. The study deck can be arranged and set up for days or weeks. You'll find what works best for you.
